The Other 3 Billion Goes Online
Indeed, the world just keeps getting smaller and smaller. Google—along with its huge partners such as HSBC and Liberty Global—recently dished out a huge amount in support of the launching of satellites that can connect as many as 3 other billion people who do not have the means to connect to the Internet until now.
Google and its partners invested a staggering 60 million dollars, which form part of the required investment worth between 150 million and 180 million dollars, in support of the O3B Networks, which stand for Other 3 Billion. The aim is to launch satellites that will then connect areas in Africa and other growing markets that still remain untapped because of lack of Internet connectivity. If everything else goes into place, there will be 16 satellites called Thales Alenia that will be placed in low orbits.
This, however, will just be one of the many huge steps that the company is going to undertake. They are also planning to convert the countless towers for mobile phones into network nodes that will permit high-speed and multipurpose connection. This may cost around 750 million dollars, though. If this is going to push through, it will lessen the price of broadband connection to as much as 95 percent, especially in areas where there is limited offer.
Business-wise, Google can definitely benefit greatly from this partnership as it can look forward to a boost in its traffic and users of its paid applications. There will also be great demand for Adwords and Adsense very soon. For Internet marketers, on the other hand, this will also signal the widening of the market, with new target audience and higher potential income for the business. It may also signal stiffer competition in the future, something everyone concerned should watch out for.
