Anna Lynn Patterson, one of the founders of Cuil, one of the newest search engines, she was able to apply for a series of patents for Google, where she worked before, which would hopefully revolutionalize and streamline the way web results are being derived. It is referred to as Google’s phrase-based indexing.
What does this mean?
The concept used in phrase-based indexing uses latent semantic indexing (LSI). For someone who’s non-technical, the explanation can be quite complicated. Nevertheless, to put it simply, it’s a system wherein related terms are grouped together. These phrases or words will be used as bases on how web pages may be ranked or indexed by Google. It will also identify which web pages will show up in search engine results page.
How different is this from the existing method of Google?
Google is more after relevancy. Thus, the more that you mention your targeted keywords into your article, the more that it will view the relationship of your key phrase to the entire document. Phrase-based indexing doesn’t completely ignore this principle. It tries to enhance it by also establishing the relationship of your keywords with other phrases in the document. For example, if the web page is all about American Idol finalists, there must be some phrases that will include their names. Google then will use the appearance of certain phrases to also determine the appearance of its related words.
How can it prevent spam?
Spammy web pages often contain keywords or phrases that may have better rankings in search engines such as Google. It doesn’t really mean, however, that they are related. However, they are added in order to generate corresponding paid advertisements. With the new method, this will be greatly minimized as there’s a huge chance that users will be able to obtain pages with meaningful content.
